DeSoto Central powerlifter Washington signs with Blue Mountain Christian University

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — DeSoto Central High School senior Marquis Washington has officially traded the high school platform for the collegiate ranks, signing a letter of intent to join the powerlifting program at Blue Mountain Christian University.

The signing marks a rapid rise for Washington, who competes in the 123-pound weight class. Despite only picking up the sport as a junior, Washington quickly became a force in Mississippi’s 7A classification. In his debut season, he secured third-place finishes at both the Region 1-7A and 7A North Half meets, ultimately qualifying for the state championships.

DeSoto Central boys’ powerlifting coach and assistant football coach Pearce Price noted that the opportunity with Blue Mountain Christian University came together quickly, reflecting Washington’s high ceiling in the sport.

“He’s a young man who has made a significant impact in a short amount of time,” Price said.

Washington, a dual-sport athlete who also played football for the Jaguars, is not finished with his high school career just yet. He is scheduled to continue his senior season on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Region 1-7A meet at Lewisburg High School.

With his college future secured, Washington enters the season as a top-tier contender with his sights set on returning to the state podium before heading to the Toppers’ roster next fall.
