UPDATE: State officials to begin investigation on Zimmerman escape
Aug. 23, 2024 – In a statement released from the Mississippi Attorney General’s office, Lynn Fitch and Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced that the departments had opened an investigation into the escape of Joshua Zimmerman from the DeSoto County Courthouse in mid-June.
According to the Cook County Jail website in Chicago, Illinois, Zimmerman remains in custody without bond with a Sept. 20 court date set. DeSoto County officials say a team from the Sheriff’s Department was sent to Chicago to begin the process of extradition. Zimmerman was also being sought by Houston, Texas police in connection with a murder case from 2023.
Aug. 21, 2024 – The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department released a statement at 8 a.m. this morning stating that Joshua Zimmerman had been captured and is in custody after barricading himself overnight inside a near west side Chicago restaurant. ABC7 Television in Chicago reports he was led out of the Seafood Junction restaurant near the United Center about 7:35 a.m. Wednesday morning in handcuffs.
Sheriff’s officials said they were working to release a statement which will be posted once it is received. In that statement, Sheriff Thomas Tuggle said a team from his department was already on the ground in Chicago beginning work on the next phase, which is returning Zimmerman back to DeSoto County.
Aug 20, 2024- Joshua Zimmerman, the accused murderer who evaded DeSoto County authorities before a June court hearing, is this evening barricaded inside a west side Chicago restaurant.
That is what is being reported by Chicago media, including ABC7 Television.
Reports were Zimmerman is alone in the restaurant and there are no innocent civilians with him.
Zimmerman was wanted for murder and robbery in DeSoto County. He’s also been accused of crimes in Houston, Texas, and elsewhere, as we have reported earlier on this website.
He was set to be involved in a court hearing in DeSoto County Circuit Court the morning of June 14 when he was able to walk away from the building and basically disappeared. He had not been seen since until U.S. Marshals reported his appearance at the Seafood Junction restaurant, located on West Madison Street, a restaurant ironically located three blocks west of the United Center, where the Democratic National Convention is underway.
The total reward money was at $15,000, including $10,000 from the U.S. Marshals Service and $5,000 from the DeSoto County District Attorney’s office.
