Woman inmate dies in custody

May 9, 2025 – The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department reports that a woman in custody died Friday as a result of a “critical medical emergency.”

The as yet unidentified inmate, listed as a 37-year-old woman, was in a medical holding cell at the Adult Detention Center when the emergency happened.  Facility staff did offer successful life saving measures and the inmate was taken by emergency medical personnel to a hospital. However she died after arriving at the hospital.

The case is now being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is conducting an independent review into the circumstances surrounding the incident.  Sheriff’s officials say they are fully cooperating with the investigation and are committed to maintaining transparency throughout the process.
