What’s open, closed on Christmas

Finding what’s open on Christmas Day can be a bit of a treasure hunt, as most major retailers close their doors to give staff the day off.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 23, here is the outlook for Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25).

What is Closed

Government offices: Local government offices will be closed on Christmas Day with an adjusted schedule for garbage pickup, as reported here (click here).

Almost all major big-box retailers and traditional grocery stores will be closed all day.

  • Retail Giants: Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam’s Club, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Kohl’s, and JCPenney.
  • Grocery Stores: Kroger,  Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods (most locations).
  • Public Services: Post offices, banks, libraries.
  • Shipping: UPS, FedEx, and USPS will not be making regular deliveries.

What is Open

Your best bets for last-minute needs are convenience stores, pharmacies, and specific casual dining chains. Note: Hours are often “modified” (e.g., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.), so call ahead.

Essentials & Pharmacies

  • Walgreens: Most stores will be open, typically from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while 24-hour locations generally remain open all day. Pharmacy hours may differ from front-of-store hours.
  • CVS: Many locations remain open, but hours vary significantly by branch. Some 24-hour locations will stay open.
  • Convenience Stores: Wawa, Circle K, and Speedway are usually open 24/7.

Coffee & Quick Bites

  • Starbucks: Many (but not all) standalone locations are open with reduced hours (often closing by 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.). Locations inside closed grocery stores will be closed.
  • Dunkin’: Many locations are open, though often with early closing times.
  • McDonald’s: Many franchises remain open, but it is up to the individual owner; check the app before going.

Sit-Down Restaurants

The following chains are famous for staying open 365 days a year:

  • Denny’s & IHOP: Most are open 24/7.
  • Waffle House: Historically open 24/7/365.

Since Christmas falls on a Thursday this year, many people are taking a “bridge day” on Friday. Expect Friday, Dec 26, to be exceptionally busy with returns and sales, while Christmas Day itself will be very quiet.
