Mitchell Cantrell, a fifth-grade teacher at the school, was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 8 by Southaven police with assistance in the apprehension by Olive Branch police officers. An April 16 court date has been scheduled in the case, according to jail information.

Southaven police said they had received a tip during the week of March 10-14 of a DeSoto Central Elementary School teacher downloading inappropriate videos and photos of minor children.

Investigators later identified the teacher as Cantrell, of Olive Branch. On his arrest, Cantrell was charged with one count of child pornography (Produce, Send, Receive, Distribute or Possess). At this time, there are no students involved with this incident.

Police Tuesday morning informed school officials of the investigation and were told that Cantrell was no longer employed with the school district.

The investigation into the case continues and no further investigation was immediately made available.
