Oct. 18, 2024 – Southaven city officials continue to “ace” the growth of racquet sports in the city, as it “loves” the latest expansion plans for tennis and paddleball courts.

Mayor Darren Musselwhite Friday said constructuction will soon start on the next phase of the Snowden Grove Tennis Complex expansion project. which is worth about $2.7 million.

When done, the complex will have eight additional tennis courts, west of the existing cluster.

“This project will move us from just four courts prior to 2017 to 20 total courts and four pickleball courts,” Musselwhite said. “It also creates the option to convert more of the old tennis courts to pickleball, creating 20 pickleball courts while still having 16 tennis courts.”

That option will be done if enough interest requires it. “Either combination will offer opportunities and facilities for our citizens to the magnitude we’ve never had before,” the mayor said.

Musselwhite has credited the 2017 start of the city tennis program and the hiring of Michael Johnson behind the growth of tennis facilities in the city.  He noted the program averages about 100 new participants annually. The United States Tennis Association-Mississippi this year named the Southaven program the best in the state.

“This project, funded completely by local tourism taxes, is part of our larger, ongoing plan to create new opportunities for our youth and enhance the lives of our citizens, in general,” said Musselwhite.

Completion of this phase of the program is projected in November of this year.

ALDERMEN TO HOLD SPECIAL MEETING TUESDAY

A special meeting of the Southaven Board of Aldermen is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22 in the Board Room of City Hall. The meeting is being called for Tuesday due to a lack of an available quorum to meet on the regularly scheduled date of Oct. 15.

Among the scheduled items on the agenda is the continued discussion of a proposed towing service location at 9210 Airways Blvd, near Stateline Road and the state line.

Concerns have been raised about the potential for increased crime possibly being attracted to the area, especially coming into Southaven from Memphis. The Conditional Use Permit proposal was recently tabled to Tuesday’s meeting for consideration.

Other items on the agenda include a planning commissioner appointment, landscape maintenance contracts, and an award of proposal/contract for professional design services for the new Court Building at 8912 Northwest Drive.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
