Schools set to welcome back students for new year

July 27, 2025 – Classes will soon start for students in DeSoto County Schools and Northpoint Christian School in Southaven.

DeSoto County Schools, Mississippi’s largest public school district, will welcome students back to classrooms on Thursday, July 31, marking the official start of the 2025-26 academic year. Teachers are returning earlier in the week, with their first day set for Monday, July 28, to prepare classrooms, finalize lesson plans, and attend district training sessions.

The district serves approximately 34,000 students across over 40 campuses in communities including Southaven, Olive Branch, Hernando, Horn Lake, and Walls. The return to school comes after a summer of preparation, including facility upgrades, including the opening of a new Hernando High School, hiring of new staff, and planning for curriculum updates.

The school year includes key dates such as:

  • Fall Break: Oct. 6–10
  • Thanksgiving Break: Nov. 24–28
  • Christmas Break: Dec. 22–Jan. 2
  • Spring Break: March 9–13, 2026
  • Last Student Day: May 22, 2026

Northpoint Christian School students will have their first day of classes on Aug. 7 with a half-day of school on its Southaven campus.
