Oct 29, 2024 – We are now seven days out from the next Presidential election on Nov. 5 and Republicans in DeSoto County are making sure their base is ready to vote on Election Day.
Some heavy hitters came out for a “Get Out The Vote” rally at Southaven’s Snowden House Monday night and the list of speakers for the event was impressive.
They included Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, state Republican Party chairman Mike Hurst, state Treasurer David McRae, state Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson, Northern District Public Service Commissioner Chris Brown and radio talk show host Gerard Gilbert, all appearing to ignite the push for Republicans on the election ballot.
Standing on the steps of the historic residence, the speakers continued to press the issue of why Vice President Kamala Harris should not be elected president, and why former President Donald Trump should be returned to office.
Hosemann reminded those in attendance of the large number of illegal immigrants allowed in the country during the Biden-Harris administration and of moves underway to allow them to vote next week.
“A federal court in Virginia just ruled that 1,500 illegals who said they were illegal can vote,” Hosemann said. “They are one at a time taking away each and every one of your ability to vote by that kind of stuff.”
Hosemann added it was during his time as Secretary of State that Mississippi required identification to be shown at the polling booth. He also talked about liberal policies pushed by the Democrats, including one where men could enter women’s locker rooms in sports.
One university allows a man to play on a women’s volleyball team and a number of opponents have forfeited matches because of that.
“We (Mississippi) had to pass a bill that prevents men from entering women’s locker rooms,” Hosemann said. “If my daddy found out that I went into a women’s locker room, you’d be listening to another Lieutenant Governor today, I can tell you that.”
Hosemann also pointed to the differences between Republicans and Democrats.
“The President said it best last night (at Madison Square Garden),” Hurst said. “Are you better off today than you were four years ago? We have an opportunity to turn this country around and we’re not going to lose that opportunity in November.”
Hurst said the differences between the candidates have never been so stark but the choice, he said, has never been so clear.
“This woman (Harris) is out of control, ladies and gentlemen,” said Hurst. ”But on the right side of history we have a simple solution to bring back common sense. We’ve got someone (Trump) who will reduce our taxes and we’ve got a person who will make America great again.”
Hurst said over the next few days the Republican party will include an election integrity program called “Secure the Vote,” which will include poll watchers and attorneys statewide to ensure election integrity.
McRae also touched on the illegal immigration issue and about Democrats who are wanting to ease allowances on abortion.
“We as Mississippians know that abortion is awful, should not happen and should be banned,” McRae said. “But yet, Harris and her Democrats want to villainize us as Republicans and make abortion legal at 25 weeks, at 16 weeks. They think Republicans are heartless but we are saving children.”
Mississippi and DeSoto County will likely support Republicans and Trump down the line on Election Day. However, the speakers asked that efforts are made to call those out of state and ask for their vote as well.
Estimates were made that about 500 supporters attended Monday’s evening’s event that had food and music in addition to the speakers.
