Olive Branch Band Named Marching Classic Grand Champions
The Olive Branch band, the Olive Branch High School Marching Band, has a new trophy line to show for its weekend. The Conquistador band earned straight Superior ratings at its MHSAA marching evaluation and was named overall Grand Champions of the Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic, the band program announced Sunday.
The program called it “a great day to be a Conquistador.” A team photo posted with the announcement shows band members gathered on the field under the lights around a cluster of trophies.
Superior Ratings at MHSAA Marching Evaluations
Marching evaluations are the band’s official state assessment for the fall season. Judges rate each part of the program on a scale where a Division I, or “Superior,” rating is the highest mark. Olive Branch got the top rating in every area:
- Drum Major: Superior (I)
- Color Guard: Superior (I)
- Percussion: Superior (I)
- Band: All Superior ratings (I)
Olive Branch Band Wins Gold Division and Grand Champion
At the Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic, Olive Branch competed in the Gold Division and won it, with first-place finishes in nearly every judged category:
- 1st Place, General Effect Music
- 1st Place, General Effect Visual
- 1st Place, Music Performance
- 1st Place, Visual Performance
- 1st Place, Percussion
- 2nd Place, Color Guard
The band then took the same categories against the full field of bands in the overall standings. It placed first in General Effect Music, General Effect Visual, Music Performance, Visual Performance and Percussion, and third in Color Guard. Those results earned Olive Branch the title of Grand Champions of the contest.
In marching band scoring, “general effect” captions measure how well a show connects with the audience and judges as a whole. “Performance” captions measure how cleanly and accurately the students play and march. Sweeping both kinds points to a show that is both entertaining and technically sharp.
Community Reaction
Within an hour of the announcement, dozens of parents, alumni and residents had congratulated the students and their directors. Many commenters praised the band’s hard work and its leadership. The program tagged the post with its #OBPride and #Bandtober hashtags, a nod to the busy October contest season.
It is not the first time the Conquistador band has earned statewide attention. Olive Branch was crowned state champion in 2024, and this weekend’s results suggest the program remains one of the strongest in North Mississippi as the fall marching season continues.
Why It Matters for DeSoto County
DeSoto County’s high school bands are some of the largest student groups in the district. They spend long summer and fall hours rehearsing for Friday night halftime shows and Saturday contests. Results like these reflect the work of students, band directors, staff, and the parents and boosters who move equipment, sew uniforms and feed the band on contest days.
Congratulations to the students and staff of the Olive Branch High School Marching Band.
