Northwest Theatre set to play “A Doll’s House” opening Nov. 8
Nov.3, 2024 – Northwest Mississippi Community College Fine Arts Theatre department is performing “A Doll’s House” two weekends in a row starting Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the college’s Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus.
“A Doll’s House” is a play by Henrik Ibsen about the protagonist Nora’s journey of self-discovery as she realizes how her marriage and husband are unsatisfactory. Since the play’s premiere in December of 1879, there’s been multiple adaptations and runs of the story.
“Nora makes a beautiful correlation to having been her father’s doll-child when she was under his authority and that her father simply passed her to Torvald, where she became his doll-wife,” said Alyssa Algee, instructor of theatre. “This show is about being raised in a culture and society that just accepts that women do not have rights apart from their husbands, that they don’t think for themselves, want things, wish for real, true, soul-wrenching love. Throughout the play, Nora begins to realize that everything she has done has been for someone else and she is ready to decide what she wants for herself when Torvald finally proves that his main purpose is to make sure that his life has the right appearance and boxes checked, despite the feelings of Nora.”
Algee said that this show has stuck with her since the first time she read it and then again when she saw it performed for the first time. It was written by one of the founding fathers of theatrical realism, Ibsen, and deals with many controversial themes including marriage problems, according to Algee.
“A Doll’s House” at the Northwest Fine Arts auditorium will run two consecutive weekends starting Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday night, two matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Sunday, both the first and second weekend. General admission tickets are $10 and for students admission is free with a valid student ID.
