Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite reported on the progress of the Embassy Suites hotel and convention center project at the Landers Center during Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting.
“Of all currently pending developments, this will be the most influential and impactful for the future of Desoto County,” Musselwhite said.
When finished, the project will pair the only convention center to an on-site hotel in the state of Mississippi. Musselwhite added the land deal should be closed in October, meaning construction should soon start after that and by spring, construction should be in full swing.
Musselwhite also announced the Getwell Road widening project is about five weeks away from completion. Turning lanes and turn signals have been added in all directions. Milling should be done by the end of this week followed by paving and striping.
The City is planning to commemorate former alderwoman and founder of the House of Grace domestic violence shelter Lorine Cady as the newest name on the Southaven Tribute Hall. A 5:15 p.m. ceremony before the second board meeting of September or first meeting of October is being planned, depending on her schedule.
Cady served on the City’s Board of Aldermen for seven four-year terms, then founded the domestic violence shelter, which in October 2023 celebrated its 25th anniversary. Her work on the Board of Aldermen helped keep Southaven from being annexed to Horn Lake, which eventually led to the city incorporated as a city in 1980.
