National Voter Registration Day
Sep 17, 2024 – Today is being recognized as National Voter Registration Day across the country, including DeSoto County. It is a special push to encourage citizens to be registered to vote ahead of the Nov. 5 general election. National Voter Registration Day has been observed each September since 2012.
National Voter Registration Day supporters say the effort has helped more than 5 million Americans become registered for vote.
The holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).
As many as one in four eligible Americans are not registered to vote. National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities during a single 24 hour democracy blitz to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.
In DeSoto County, Oct. 7 is the last day to register to vote for the November general election. You can register in person until 5 p.m. at the Circuit Clerk’s office in the County Courthouse in Hernando. You can also download a voter registration application online which must be postmarked by Oct. 7 in order to vote in the general election, or presented in person at the Circuit Clerk’s office by Oct. 7.
