SOUTHAVEN, MS – The spirit of community service and the power of family volunteering shone brightly at Southaven Elementary School on December 3, as the library received a Modern Woodmen Do-Good Grant® specifically aimed at advancing STEM literacy among students.
Librarian Kim Robinson and Principal Leanna Clark accepted the $200 grant, which will be used to purchase new books and materials focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The initiative supports a project designed to increase students’ reading levels and spark a deeper interest in STEM subjects.
The presentation of the grant was made by Jim Robinson, Modern Woodmen District Agent.
The grant was secured by a local Modern Woodmen member family, highlighting the organization’s philosophy: “The family that volunteers together makes memories (and impact and life lessons) together.”
Modern Woodmen’s Do-Good Grant® is designed to empower members to execute small, hands-on family service projects within their community.
“This grant allows our members to choose a cause that matters most to their family and make an immediate, tangible impact,” said Robinson. “It’s about more than the $200 in seed money; it’s about modeling the values of service and generosity for the next generation.”
The Grant in Action:
The $200 grant gives members the resources needed to execute a project they choose. The family selected Southaven Elementary’s library to directly benefit local students, helping Mrs. Robinson acquire new, engaging resources that connect reading with real-world scientific exploration.
A Note for Modern Woodmen Members:
The organization encourages other members to take part in similar initiatives. Members can apply for a Do-Good Grant® each year online at member.modernwoodmen.org. To qualify, applicants must be members with a life insurance or annuity certificate in good standing.
