Man dies in DeSoto County hit-and-run
A Charleston, Mississippi man is dead after he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in DeSoto County on Independence Day.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) reports the victim as Donterio T. Brewer, age 32 of Charleston.
Brewer was walking north in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 61 in DeSoto County late Sunday morning when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, which left the scene.
MHP said Brewer received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Brewer’s death was one of two fatalities reported by MHP during the Fourth of July holiday weekend reporting period in Mississippi.
The other fatal crash took place in Lowndes County early Monday morning. Preliminary information also described the crash as a hit-and-run collision.
Marquis R. Dixon, age 31 of Columbus, Mississippi, was on a 2013 Kymco scooter heading south on state Highway 373 about 1:20 a.m. when he was hit by an unknown vehicle, which then left the scene. Dixon received fatal injuries from the crash.
Troopers were kept busy on the highways during the holiday weekend. A total of 6,140 citations were issued and there were 146 DUI arrests. A total of 151 crashes were investigated, including the two fatalities and accidents that resulted in 50 injuries on state, federal and interstate highways.
