Lower gasoline pump prices expected for Memorial Day weekend
May 20, 2025 – The national gas price monitoring website GasBuddy expects some significant savings at the gas pump for travelers during the Memorial Day weekend compared to the same time one year ago.
For Memorial Day, the national average is projected to be $3.08 per gallon, down significantly from $3.58 on Memorial Day last year. This year’s relatively lower prices are influenced by lower crude oil costs amid an increase in oil production from OPEC+, the potential for a nuclear deal with Iran, and some economic uncertainty.
Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy also predicts that, as summer progresses and refinery maintenance concludes, the national average price of gasoline could fall below $3 per gallon at times this summer.
“While we’re forecasting the lowest summer gas prices in years, economic jitters are slightly dampening optimism — but we still expect a robust travel season, with millions of Americans hitting the road, many for extended trips,” said De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Rather than canceling plans, travelers are becoming more strategic with their spending.”
The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that, heading into the Memorial Day weekend, Southern states remain where the lowest gasoline pump prices are found, led by Mississippi with an average price of $2.665 a gallon. Louisiana was next at $2.720 and Alabama at $2.752 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. Tennessee was close behind in fourth with an average price of $2.758. California remains the state with the most expensive pump price at $4.895 a gallon.
DeSoto County’s average gas price on Tuesday, May 20 is $2.631 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. Average gas prices were cheaper than DeSoto County in Marshall County ($2.612) but more expensive in Tunica ($2.745) and Tate ($2.694) counties.
One year ago, Mississippi’s average pump price for regular unleaded with $3.048 a gallon.
