HERNANDO, Miss. – The transformation of Renasant Park into a premier regional destination is reaching critical milestones as construction enters the home stretch for Phase 2. City officials confirmed this week that the “Heindl Center for the Performing Arts Baseball/Softball Fields” are on track for a Summer 2026 opening, marking a historic investment in the community’s quality of life.

Since the official notice to proceed was issued to Nickson General Contractors on Jan. 9, 2025, the $6.5 million sports complex has rapidly taken shape. Following site preparation and clearing in February, the project has transitioned from heavy earthwork to vertical construction.

Construction Milestones

The signature 1,300-square-foot centralized concession and restroom building is currently a focal point of activity. With masonry work complete, crews are preparing to install the roof. Once the structure is “dried in,” interior work—including plumbing and electrical—will begin regardless of spring weather conditions.

Across the four-field “quad,” the skyline has changed with the near-completion of MUSCO LED Sports lighting. On the ground, masonry teams are currently erecting dugouts and backstop walls.

Infrastructure and Accessibility

Commuters on Robertson Gin Road will notice a significant shift in the park’s footprint. A new 840-linear-foot roadway has been cleared, moving the northern entrance southward to accommodate the new quad. This infrastructure upgrade includes improved entrance and exit lanes designed to manage the heavy traffic flow expected during tournament weekends.

A Hybrid Approach to Play

The fields themselves represent a high-performance hybrid design. To maximize durability while maintaining a traditional feel, the complex will feature:

  • Infields: State-of-the-art artificial turf to reduce rainouts and maintenance.
  • Outfields: Premium Tifway Bermuda 419 grass for a professional-grade playing surface.

Looking Toward the 2026 Season

Flatwork, asphalt paving, and the final installation of sod and turf are slated for completion this spring. If the timeline holds, the City of Hernando Parks and Recreation Department plans to launch its inaugural season of fall baseball, softball, and tee-ball at the complex in late 2026.

This project, combined with the nature-focused Phase 1, brings the total investment in Renasant Park to $9.2 million—the largest parks expenditure in the city’s history.
