Aug 14, 2024 – Hernando city leaders took a moment during their most recent Board of Aldermen meeting to honor Cindy Gordon with the city’s Community Service Award.
Gordon is secretary of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi Board of Directors, said Mayor Chip Johnson. Gordon is a past president of the DeSoto Arts Council and Johnson said she has also been implemental making the dog park at Renasant Park a reality.
“The dog park we have now would not be there without Cindy,” Johnson said. “She and her staff probably not only led the effort but raised or gave most of the money for it. So the dog park was built on land owned by the city. It’s now run by the parks department and heavily used.”
Gordon has been heavily involved in the annual Hernando Veterans Parade and luncheon and the Christmas luncheon for veterans and families.
Gordon related how the servicemen appreciate what is done for them.
“I had a National Guardsman come up to me and he said, ‘I’ve been a National Guardsman for a long, long time and I’ve been to different locations,” Gordon said. “He said there has never been a location like this, that the community has supported us.”
Gordon thanked the city for supporting her volunteer efforts.
“We’re really all responsible for the good works that get done here and you guys lead the way so I want to thank you,” Gordon said.
The Board of Aldermen agenda is found on the city’s website and the livestream of the meeting is found on the city’s YouTube channel.
