Fitch rules force justified in DeSoto County officer-involved incidents
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch Monday announced that the use of force was justified by law enforcement in five officer-involved shootings, including two incidents from DeSoto County.
One of the cases brought up took place on March 22, 2023, when a Southaven police officer-involved shooting occurred around 2 a.m. That’s when officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near Stateline and Horn Lake Roads.
When police approached, the vehicle’s occupants reportedly ambushed the officers by opening fire. The suspects fled, but one, Travion Hollomon, was later apprehended with non-life-threatening injuries and taken to the hospital.
No officers were injured, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation led the investigation.
Another incident that Fitch addressed was an April 17, 2022 incident in Horn Lake involving an agent of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department.
Officer-involved shootings in Waynesboro from 2021, in 2023 from Carthage, and another in Columbia, Mississippi in 2023 were also ruled to have been justified.
In all five incidents, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified. Pursuant to Section 45-1-6 of the Mississippi Code, the reviews followed an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
