DeSoto County Soil and Water Conservation District to host annual tree giveaway at new location
NESBIT, Miss. — The DeSoto County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its Annual Public Tree Giveaway on Thursday, Feb. 12, offering residents free trees and shrubs while supplies last.
The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will take place at a new location this year: the DeSoto County Agri-Education Arena, located at 1170 Starlanding Road West in Nesbit.
According to DeSoto Soil and Water Conservation District Administrator Stacey Pirtle, “The event is an annual event sponsored by DeSoto Soil & Water Conservation District in observance of Mississippi Arbor Day, which is celebrated the second Friday in February.”
Pirtle said SWCD has purchased 16,500 trees for DeSoto County residents. There are 20 species of trees available with a limit of three trees per species (except the loblolly pines-residents are able to take up to 50 of those).
“Our goal is for all of our trees to be planted in DeSoto County, so this event is exclusively for the residents of DeSoto County,” Pirtle said. “Trees are provided for personal use and not for resale. The trees go quickly, so we encourage residents to arrive early.”

The department described the positions as an opportunity to serve the community while joining a rapidly growing fire and emergency services organization.
