DeSoto County Opens Community Safe Rooms Ahead of Severe Weather
Community safe rooms will open across DeSoto County this afternoon due to the threat of severe weather, according to local officials. The safe rooms are available to anyone who prefers sheltering in a designated safe location rather than their home.
The safe rooms will open at 5:30 p.m. at Hernando Elementary, located at 455 Riley Street. Additional safe rooms will open at Horn Lake Elementary, 6341 Ridgewood; Hope Sullivan Elementary, 7985 Southaven Circle West; Lewisburg Elementary, 1717 Craft Road; Walls Elementary, 6131 Delta View Road; and Olive Branch Elementary, 9549 Pigeon Roost.
Safe rooms will also open at the Southaven Community Safe Room, 7312 Highway 51N, once a tornado watch is issued. The facilities are managed by local government agencies, including the cities of Hernando, Horn Lake, Olive Branch, Southaven, and DeSoto County.
Officials emphasize that these safe rooms are intended for pre-storm sheltering and should not be driven to once a warning is issued.
