DeSoto County DA’s roadside message warn New Year’s Eve drivers about DUI risks

HERNANDO, Miss. — As New Year’s Eve celebrations ramp up across DeSoto County, local prosecutors are issuing a pointed reminder to anyone considering getting behind the wheel after drinking. A roadside Variable Message Sign placed along county roadways is displaying a memorable — and intentionally jarring — warning for holiday motorists.

The sign reads:
“Humpty Dumpty Drove .08. Humpty Dumpty Met The State.”

The message will remain posted through New Year’s Night. Officials say the goal is simple: stop impaired driving before it starts.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 12,000 people are killed each year in alcohol‑impaired crashes nationwide, with nearly one‑third of all U.S. traffic fatalities involving a legally impaired driver. That equates to one life lost approximately every 40 minutes.

Mississippi sees similar trends. Data from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety shows that alcohol‑related crashes claim more than 150 lives annually, with holiday periods — including New Year’s Eve — consistently producing sharp increases in fatal wrecks.

“New Year’s should be a time of celebration, not tragedy,” DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton said. “This message is meant to be simple and memorable, but the reality behind it is deadly serious. If you choose to drink and drive, you are risking lives and you will face consequences.”

The DA’s office is urging residents to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using ride‑share services, or arranging safe transportation before heading out to celebrate. Officials say those choices can prevent crashes, save lives, and ensure the community enters the New Year safely.
