The Hernando Farmers Market opened Saturday morning with a special proclamation for a four-pawed friend known for spreading smiles and cheers to those who need a smile, all across DeSoto County, and beyond.

On the occasion of his birthday, Saturday was declared Cuddles Day by Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson, a proclamation read on the steps of the DeSoto County Courthouse.

We introduced you to the Shetland sheepdog last December, telling the story that the so-called ‘slaughter dog’ of dog fighters in the hood of Frayser and North Memphis was rescued by Larry Worthy and became his ‘furrever’ friend, you might say.

Since then, Cuddles and Worthy will visit with people wherever they can, including special needs schools, hospitals, and nursing homes, meeting people, spreading goodwill and comforting those needing a kind paw.

In reading the proclamation, Johnson said Cuddles was deserving of the honor of being recognized by the city.

“Her special nature and gentle demeanor has befriended countless individuals over the years, including small children and residents in area nursing homes and hospitals,” Johnson said. “Cuddles represents our community with plenty of pep and ‘pawfuls’ of personality.”

Worthy thanked everyone for coming, adding, “It’s been a great adventure and we still have a great deal to do.”
