Coleman to prison while waiting new actions in Southaven shooting case

June 26, 2025 – A Memphis man involved in a Southaven shooting incident after stealing a vehicle earlier in June will stay in jail. Marcus Coleman is to head to prison after violating his post-release supervision on a 2024 guilty plea while he awaits court consideration in the June arrest.

Coleman, age 20 of Memphis, entered a guilty plea in December of last year on charges of receiving stolen property. He was sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

On June 13, Coleman was arrested as a suspect in a stolen vehicle met by Southaven police at the Sonic Drive-in on Stateline Road West (Main Street).

Police said Coleman tried to ram police vehicles and tried to run over a police officer, resulting in shots being fired. Coleman was later arrested after a brief foot chase.

The DeSoto County District Attorney’s moved to prevent Coleman from posting bond, and bond was revoked on June 16.

Thursday, the District Attorney’s Office announced that the five years of the post-release supervision had been revoked and Coleman is now to be transferred to Mississippi Department of Corrections custody to serve the complete sentence.

“His new charges are still pending indictment — and we are actively working with law enforcement to pursue those to the fullest extent of the law,” said the DA’s office in the announcement. “Actions have consequences — especially when you put our law enforcement officers and community at risk.”

Those new charges are extensive in relation to the latest incident for Coleman. They included aggravated assault on an officer, felony conspiracy to commit a crime, fleeing/eluding an officer in a vehicle, resisting arrest, and a fugitive from justice, among others.
