Sep 10, 2024- Southaven city officials will take a moment on Tuesday, Sept. 17 before the Board of Aldermen meeting to add a new name to the city’s Tribute Hall at City Hall.

At 5:15 p.m., a ceremony will take place to unveil the latest plaque with the name of Lorine Cady on it.

Cady became active in a number of levels when she and her husband came to Southaven in 1965, before incorporation.

Cady led efforts to create opportunities for both girls and boys with youth sports and other recreational activities in the young community.  She would later become the Chairman of the Parks Commission as a volunteer.  Cady became active . getting land from DeSoto County for what became Cherry Valley Park and for Greenbrook Park.

When it looked like the Southaven community was facing annexation by Horn Lake in the mid-1970s, it was Cady who led the effort to fight it by going door-to-door to raise funds for attorneys. It was the fight that led to Southaven’s incorporation as a city in 1980.

Four years later, Cady was elected to the Board of  Aldermen, the first of seven terms on the board.  During that time, the city successfully was able to achieve several annexations to add to the young city. City officials also started a senior services division along with continued parks and recreation support during Cady’s time in office.

After her time on the Board of Aldermen, Cady turned her attention to the issue of domestic violence and founded the House of Grace domestic violence shelter, which continues today. Cady served as Executive Director for the House of Grace until she retired three years ago.

Her induction to the Tribute Hall will take place at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, ahead of the Board of Aldermen meeting that evening at 6 p.m.
