Blackwell: Legislative Week 2 Update: On track and moving forward

By State Sen. Kevin Blackwell

Note: The following article is a weekly update on state Senate activities as provided by state Sen. Kevin Blackwell (R-Southaven)

As we continue our work in the 2025 legislative session, I wanted to provide you with a quick update on the progress of the Mississippi Senate, as well as important upcoming deadlines concerning legislation.

Highlights from week two:

Last week, the Mississippi Senate honored several former legislators whose contributions to our state will not be forgotten. We passed Senate Concurrent Resolutions 502 through 506, recognizing the legacies of former Senators John J. Fraiser, Jr., Edwin Pittman, Charles Pittman, and Nickey Browning. These resolutions ensure that their dedicated service and impactful work will continue to inspire future generations.

Additionally, we passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 508, which honors the legacies of blues legend B.B. King and Civil Rights icon Medgar Evers as we celebrate their 100th birthdays. Mississippi is fortunate to have been the home of these extraordinary individuals, and their contributions to our culture and history remain invaluable.

On Jan. 14, the Oak Grove High School choir also graced the Capitol with a beautiful performance as part of Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann’s tradition of showcasing the talents of Mississippi students. It was a wonderful moment to see young Mississippians shining in our state’s Capitol!

Upcoming Legislative Deadlines:

As we continue moving forward in this legislative session, please note the following key deadlines that are approaching quickly:

Monday, Jan. 20 – Today is the deadline for the INTRODUCTION of general bills and constitutional amendments. This is a crucial deadline as it marks the final day for new legislation to be formally introduced in the Senate.

Tuesday, Feb. 4 – Deadline for COMMITTEES TO REPORT general bills and constitutional amendments originating in their own house. By this date, committees must act on legislation introduced in their respective chambers.

These deadlines are important as they shape the flow of legislation through the process. After Jan. 20, the focus will shift toward reviewing and advancing the bills that have been introduced, so we are working diligently to ensure that the issues important to our communities are addressed.

Looking Ahead:

As always, my priority remains serving the people of my district and ensuring that Mississippi continues to move forward. If you have thoughts, concerns, or questions about any of the legislation being discussed, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your input is invaluable, and I’m here to serve you.

Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to keeping you updated as the session progresses.

Warm regards,

Kevin Blackwell
