Hernando awarded Transportation Alternatives grant

Pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Mt. Pleasant Road

The City of Hernando Bike Lane Improvements project application for Mt. Pleasant Road has been selected for a FY 22/23 Transportation Alternatives (TA) grant in the amount of $176,000.

The federal grant was awarded in coordination with The Memphis MPO and The Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The project will provide funding for the city to install new bike lanes on Mt. Pleasant Road, linking the existing bike lanes to Commerce Street, and will also connect the Mt. Pleasant corridor with the McIngvale multi-use trail, using the existing bike lanes on Riley Street.

The project is listed on the City’s Bike and Pedestrian Plan and supports the City’s commitment to provide safe and affordable mobility, as well as promoting active lifestyles for its residents and visitors.

“The extension of the bike lanes on Mt. Pleasant Road will give those who like to ride their bikes a place to ride safely, and the marked bike lanes give motorists a clear path to travel safely past the cyclists for consistent traffic flow,” said Mayor Chip Johnson. “The new connection to Riley Street will also give students a safe route to the school campuses and others a new opportunity to extend their ride by utilizing the McIngvale multi-use trail which extends another three miles.”
