DCS COVID-19 numbers take deep dive

New coronavirus case and quarantine numbers among DeSoto County School District (DCS) students took a deep dive in the past week, dropping by slightly over half for cases and by more than half for new quarantines from the previous week. 

According to new numbers posted by the school district on Monday, new case numbers in DCS schools totaled only 50 for the week ending Friday, Oct. 15. New quarantine numbers were only at 68 for the same week  

That is compared to a new case total of 98 for the previous week and 202 new quarantines during that same previous week ending Friday, Oct. 8. 

The latest report should also take into account that school was not in session on Monday, Oct. 11 for Columbus Day holiday.  

DeSoto Central Middle School saw the most number of new COVID-19 cases in the past week at six. Center Hill High School had five new cases reported and there were four new cases from both Lake Cormorant High School and also at Southaven High School.

Of the 68 new quarantine reports among the district schools, 11 came from Olive Branch Intermediate and 10 each at Center Hill High School and at Hernando Middle School.  

There were 14 schools that had neither new cases or quarantines in the past week, according to the district update. 

Thirteen staff members and teachers reported a positive COVID-19 test in the past week.
