Spring is a busy time of the year for gardeners. Meeting at the M R Davis Library on March 4, DeSoto Civic Garden Club members had a refresher course to get ready for the new gardening season. Hosted by Barbara Huling and Donna Carey, they prepared an array of snacks with a “Luck of the Irish” theme.
Dawn Weiss presented a program, Seed Planting and Spring Clean Up & Preparation. It’s four weeks until the estimated last frost date so it’s time to start your preparation. Plant and trim roses and hydrangeas. After pulling up any visible weeds in flower beds, apply 2 inches of mulch to prevent new weeds. Sow seeds for cool weather vegetables such as broccoli, peas, beets, cabbage, mustards, spinach and lettuce. Flower seeds that can be sown now are marigolds, 4 o’clocks and nasturtiums. Around mid-March, sow cucumbers, zinnias and sunflowers. Herbs, micro-greens and bulbs can be started or planted now as well.
We were reminded of spring chores to focus on such as: clean and sharpen tools; clean fallen branches and debris; prune dead or diseased branches from shrubs and finish any left over projects. At the conclusion of the program, a drawing was held for a beautiful pot of purple hyacinths planted by Dawn.
The days are warmer so now is the time to get outside and get busy. Happy Gardening!
