ACLU official warns court, congressional actions could erode Voting Rights Act

Jarvis Dortch, executive director of the ACLU of Mississippi and a former state lawmaker, warned that a pending U.S. Supreme Court decision in a Louisiana case and actions in Congress could undermine the Voting Rights Act, he said.

Dortch said those developments could “turn back the clock” on voting rights and redistricting in Mississippi and elsewhere, according to a statement from the ACLU of Mississippi.

The ACLU of Mississippi attributed the concern to the potential legal and legislative changes arising from the Louisiana case and congressional efforts, saying they could weaken protections established under the Voting Rights Act.

An automated audio recording accompanied the release; humans wrote and edited the statement, the ACLU said.
