William Carey basketball coach Steve Knight retires after 44 years

Steve Knight has stepped down as the men’s basketball coach at William Carey University after 44 years in the position, the school announced Thursday. Knight, 67, became the head coach in July 1982 at age 25 and is the most successful college basketball coach in Mississippi history.

During his tenure, Knight led the Crusaders to 19 conference championships, 15 appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, and 22 seasons with 20 or more wins. On Nov. 10, 2010, he surpassed Alcorn State legend Davey Whitney for the state’s career wins record, finishing with more than 500 victories.

William Carey’s athletic director Tracy English credited Knight with transforming the school’s athletics program. “He produced championship teams and sent many players into successful careers,” English said. “The basketball program and the university owe a lot to him.”

Knight also served as the school’s athletic director from 1987 to 2016, overseeing a significant expansion in sports offerings from five to 17. His contributions have earned him induction into multiple halls of fame, including the Southern Miss M Club Hall of Fame and the William Carey Hall of Fame.

Knight cited his recent successful season and personal reasons for his retirement. His Crusaders finished 28-5 this year, tying the school record for wins and earning a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. “I want to go out on a winning note,” Knight said. “Plus, I want to watch my grandkids play and travel while I can.”

Reflecting on his career, Knight said, “What a ride it has been.” His impact on Mississippi college basketball is widely recognized, and his departure marks the end of an era at William Carey.
