Mississippi Senate Weekly Summary
The Mississippi Senate had an eventful fourth week of the 2025 Legislative Session, marked by significant legislative actions, recognitions, and performances. The Senate passed House Concurrent Resolution 31, calling for a joint session of the Legislature on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, for the Governor’s State of the State address.
The Senate on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, honored Dr. Steven Reed, co-owner of Southern Eye Clinic of Vicksburg, with presentation of Senate Resolution 24, for being the first Mississippian to serve as President of the American Optometric Association.
The Senate on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, commended the Heidelberg High School Oilers Football Team and Head Coach Darryl Carter for winning their first-ever MHSAA Class 2A State Championship with a presentation by Senator Juan Barnett, of Senate Resolution 8.
The West Lauderdale High School choir performed on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, in the second-floor rotunda as part of Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann’s tradition of inviting students to share their talents at the Capitol.
Senators attended numerous committee meetings throughout the week and are preparing for a busy schedule next week as the February 4 deadline approaches for committees to report general bills and constitutional amendments originating in the Senate.
As of Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, 1,013 Senate bills and resolutions were filed.
Mississippi House of Representatives Weekly Summary
The fourth week of the 2025 Legislative Session commenced on Monday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m., as the House reconvened to continue legislative proceedings.
During the session, a resolution was adopted to schedule the annual State of the State Address by Governor Tate Reeves for Wednesday, Jan. 29. The address would be delivered from the south steps of the Capitol, where the Governor will outline key policy priorities and legislative objectives for the upcoming year.
The House recently passed several bills, including HB 287, designating the sweet potato as the official state vegetable. HB 922 raises capital expenditure thresholds for Certificate of Need (CON) requirements, easing regulations. HB 1063 provides state employees with eight weeks of fully paid leave for primary caregivers and two weeks for secondary caregivers after the birth or adoption of a child. These measures now move to the Senate for consideration.
On Thursday, the House observed a moment of silence to honor the 64 passengers who tragically lost their lives in the plane crash at Reagan National Airport.
Looking ahead, key legislative deadlines are approaching. Tuesday, February 4, marks the deadline for committees to report general bills and constitutional amendments originating in their respective chambers. Thursday, February 13, is the final day for original floor action on general bills and constitutional amendments introduced in their respective chambers.
The House is set to reconvene at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3.
