Third train derailment in Mississippi in just two days

July 6, 2025 – Emergency crews are responding to a train derailment north of Sardis in Panola County, according to a public notice from the Panola County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). First responders from the county EMA, Sheriff’s Department, Sardis Fire Department, and railroad representatives are on-site assessing the situation. The release states:

“There is currently no fire danger, however, there are tanker cars involved. We ask that the public not come near the scene while we get the situation handled. THERE IS NO CURRENT DANGER TO THE PUBLIC AT THIS TIME.”

A Surge in Derailments

This Sardis derailment marks the third train incident in Mississippi over the past two days:

  1. Petal Derailment (July 5)
    A train carrying cooking oil came off the tracks in Petal around 4:30 p.m., with two tanker cars affected—one fully derailed and one partially. Roads near Chappell Hill Road and Highway 11 were closed briefly, and no injuries were reported
  2. Tallahatchie County Derailment (July 5)
    Near Glendora, a Canadian National Railway train carrying benzene derailed around 2:47 p.m., causing a fire and the derailment of 13 cars. Roughly 200 residents were evacuated. No injuries were confirmed, but benzene’s flammability and toxicity raised significant health concerns
  3. Panola County Incident (July 6)
    The current derailment near Sardis involved tanker cars but no fire or injuries have been reported yet.
