HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — A Rust College senior’s research paper has been accepted for presentation at the prestigious Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), marking a significant achievement for the college’s STEM program.

Karmece Talley, a computer science major, is the first student in the college’s “modern era of innovation” to have a peer-reviewed paper accepted at a premier STEM conference, according to a press release.

The conference, ranked second globally among similar conferences in a 2021 Microsoft Academic study, selected a paper Talley co-authored titled, “Can AI Recognize Its Own Reflection? Self-Detection Performance of LLMs in Computing Education.” The research explores artificial intelligence and its applications in computer science education.

In the announcement, Rust College called the accomplishment a “significant moment” in the school’s advancement in research and academic excellence. The college credited Professor Tawana Robinson and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for leadership in “fostering scholarly excellence among students.”

Talley is set to present the research at the upcoming international conference.
