Storm losses across Mississippi top $107 million
Mississippi’s insurance industry is reporting more than $107 million in property losses after last month’s severe winter weather, with more than 12,000 claims filed statewide, according to the Mississippi Insurance Department.
Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney said insurers were ordered to participate in a statewide data call to track the extent of the damage. Early reports show over 10,000 residential property claims, and 55 percent of all claims have already been closed. More than $60 million has been paid to policyholders so far.

How to File a Property Damage Claim
State officials urge affected residents to file claims as soon as possible and follow these steps to avoid delays:
- Gather all policy numbers and notify your insurer promptly, as some policies have strict reporting deadlines.
- Ask your insurer which documents and forms are required.
- Keep a written record of all conversations with insurers, creditors, and relief agencies.
- If your home is uninhabitable, ask whether your policy includes additional living expense coverage.
- Photograph and video all damage and prepare an inventory of damaged or lost items before the adjuster arrives.
- Make only temporary repairs to prevent further damage; do not begin permanent repairs until the insurer inspects the property and agrees on repair costs.
- Save all receipts, including those for temporary repairs.
- Keep damaged items for the adjuster to review.
- Request an itemized explanation of any settlement offer.
- Understand that larger claims may take longer to process.
