Southaven shopper snags $50,000 Powerball prize as jackpot swells to $1 billion
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – While the rest of the country holds its breath for a historic $1 billion drawing this weekend, luck has already struck in DeSoto County. A Southaven lottery player is $50,000 richer after the Wednesday, Dec. 10 Powerball drawing.
According to the Mississippi Lottery Corporation, the winning ticket was purchased at Kroger #404, located on Stateline Road West in Southaven.
A Close Call for $10 Million
The Southaven winner didn’t just play the standard Powerball; they opted for the Double Play add-on, a $1 feature that enters the player’s numbers into a separate, second-chance drawing.
The ticket matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball in the Double Play drawing. This feat secured the $50,000 prize. However, the player was agonizingly close to a life-changing sum—had they matched just one more white ball, they would have claimed the $10 million top prize.
This marks a significant win for the state, following a victory in February where a player in Petal won the full $10 million Double Play jackpot.
Powerball Jackpot Hits $1 Billion
The local win comes amidst a nationwide ticket-buying frenzy. With no jackpot winner on Wednesday, the Powerball Grand Prize has rolled over to an estimated $1 billion for the upcoming drawing on Saturday, Dec. 13. The estimated cash value for the prize is $461.3 million.
This current run is historic. The jackpot has rolled over for 42 consecutive drawings, tying the record for the longest jackpot run in Powerball history. If a player hits the winning numbers this Saturday, it will rank as the seventh-largest jackpot ever recorded.
Upcoming Drawings
Players hoping to follow in the local winner’s footsteps have several chances this weekend:
- Mega Millions: Friday’s jackpot is an estimated $70 million.
- Mississippi Match 5: The jackpot for tonight remains at an estimated $214,000.
- Powerball: The historic $1 billion drawing takes place Saturday night.
