Presidential electors cast ballots in Mississippi
Dec 17, 2024-The next part of the presidential election process has taken place in Mississippi, as the state’s six presidential electors cast their ballots for Donald Trump for President and J.D. Vance for Vice President.
Voters on Election Day actually vote for presidential electors to the Electoral College. With the Trump/Vance candidacy having won the popular vote on Election Day, the six assigned electors meet to cast their vote in accordance with the U.S. Constitution, federal law, state law and the voting results of the 2024 presidential election. Gov. Tate Reeves and Secretary of State Michael Watson were on hand at the event Tuesday morning.
“Mississippi is proud to cast its six electoral votes for Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance,” said Reeves.
The Electoral College is a constitutionally mandated process consisting of the selection of electors, the meeting of electors to vote for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral votes by Congress.
The Electoral College consists of 538 electors, a majority (270) of which is required to elect the President and Vice President. Each state has the same number of electors as it has members in its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of Representatives plus two U.S. Senators.
Mississippi’s electors were recommended by Reeves and subsequently elected by the Mississippi Republican Party at its state convention. The Presidential Electors for Mississippi are former Gov. Phil Bryant; Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Chris Brown; Mississippi state Sens.Tyler McCaughan and Ben Suber; along with Charlie Stephenson; and Terry Reeves.
