Officials caution to practice safety with fireworks
JACKSON, Miss. — As Mississippians prepare to ring in the New Year, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney is urging residents to use caution when shooting fireworks. The reminder comes as national data shows the continued dangers associated with holiday celebrations.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks caused more than 32,000 fires in 2023, leading to an estimated $142 million in property damage.
Chaney said homeowners should also be aware of how improper firework use can affect insurance coverage.
“Standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage from accidental fires, like those caused by fireworks, but there are exceptions,” Chaney said. “If you set off fireworks where they are not allowed, your policy might not cover the damage. Check local laws to find out if fireworks are legal in your area. Your insurance company can also tell you if there are any fire restrictions in your policy.”
Firework Safety Tips
The State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends the following safety measures:
- Read and follow all directions on fireworks.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Buy only from reputable sellers and store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
- Ensure an adult is always present when fireworks are being used.
- Place used fireworks in a bucket of water and keep a hose nearby.
- Use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass, and trees.
- Light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance.
- Do not experiment with or attempt to make fireworks.
- Never re‑ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
- Keep fireworks away from small children.
- Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
- Avoid shooting fireworks in metal or glass containers.
- Follow all local laws and restrictions.
Officials also remind residents that some municipalities prohibit fireworks within city limits. Anyone planning to purchase or use fireworks should check with local fire protection officials to ensure compliance.
