Officer wounded in Greenwood shooting

GREENWOOD, Miss. — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing an officer-involved shooting that left a Greenwood police officer and a suspect hospitalized Monday.

The incident began Dec. 22 when Greenwood Police Department officers arrived at a residence on Cotton Street to conduct a welfare check. According to investigators, a man inside the home opened fire as officers approached, striking one officer.

The wounded officer was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Following the initial gunfire, the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence. After a brief standoff, the man surrendered to law enforcement. He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. Authorities have not yet specified the nature of the suspect’s injuries.

MBI agents are currently processing the scene and gathering evidence. Once the state’s investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review.

Officials cautioned that the information is preliminary as the investigation remains in its early stages. No other injuries were reported.
