New leadership appointed for Mississippi Highway Patrol and Standards Training
JACKSON, Miss. – Commissioner Sean Tindell of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS) has officially announced a significant shift in the state’s law enforcement leadership. Tadd Pitts has been named the new Colonel of the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), while Amy Vanderford has been appointed as the Director of the Office of Standards and Training.
The appointments, backed by Governor Tate Reeves, signal a focus on legislative coordination and elevating the quality of law enforcement training across the Magnolia State.
Colonel Tadd Pitts: A Legacy of Service
Colonel Pitts, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, brings a diverse background to the helm of the Highway Patrol. His career spans from serving as a deputy for the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office to being a graduate of MHP Cadet Class #59.
Pitts is no stranger to the political and administrative side of public safety, having served on the Governor’s policy team and as Executive Protection for the Mississippi Speaker of the House. Most recently, he served as Deputy Commissioner and Director of Governmental Affairs.
“Colonel Pitts exemplifies hard work, dedication, and compassion,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell. “He is deeply committed to what is best for the people of Mississippi.”

Dr. Amy Vanderford: Elevating Training Standards
Amy Vanderford takes over as Director of the Office of Standards and Training with over 25 years of law enforcement experience. With a doctorate from Delta State University, Vanderford’s expertise lies in curriculum development and academy leadership.
She previously served as the Director of the Mississippi Delta Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy and held a role as an agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. Her appointment is expected to strengthen the rigor and professionalism of officer training statewide.
A Unified Vision for Public Safety
Governor Tate Reeves emphasized that these appointments are central to his administration’s goal of enhancing state security.
“Tadd and Amy are two incredibly talented individuals,” Governor Reeves stated. “As key members of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety’s leadership team, I know they will help us continue keeping Mississippians safe.”
