Mississippi reports first pertussis death in over a decade as cases surge

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has confirmed that an infant in the state recently died from pertussis, also known as whooping cough. The infant was less than 2 months old and not yet age-eligible for vaccination. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, MSDH is not releasing the child’s gender or location.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease marked by violent coughing fits that make it difficult to breathe. While it can affect people of all ages, infants under 1 year old are most at risk of severe illness and death.

Since Jan. 1, 2025, MSDH has reported 115 cases of pertussis statewide, a sharp rise from the 49 cases reported in 2024. With this death, Mississippi has now recorded three pediatric pertussis deaths since 2008. The agency noted this is the first pertussis death in more than 12 years.

Vaccination Recommendations

MSDH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasize vaccination as the best protection against pertussis.

  • Children should receive the DTaP vaccine at 2, 4, and 6 months, with boosters at 15–18 months and 4–6 years.
  • Pre-teens should receive a Tdap booster at 11–12 years.
  • Pregnant women are advised to receive a Tdap dose between 27–36 weeks of pregnancy to protect their newborns.
  • Adults who have never received Tdap should get one dose, and boosters every 10 years can be given as Tdap.

Health officials also stress the importance of vaccination for grandparents and others in close contact with infants, since even healthy adults can unknowingly spread the disease.

Preventing the Spread

MSDH urges Mississippians to take extra precautions:

  • Get treated with antibiotics if exposed to pertussis.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Wash hands frequently.

Vaccinations for children are available through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, Medicaid, CHIP, and private insurance. Adult vaccinations are available at county health departments, private physicians, and pharmacies.
