Mississippi reports first pediatric flu death of 2025-2026 season

The Mississippi State Department of Health announced Friday the first confirmed pediatric flu death of the 2025-2026 flu season. The death is among 28 pediatric fatalities reported in the state since officials began tracking these numbers during the 2008-2009 flu season.

Flu activity in Mississippi typically peaks between January and March. Health officials noted that the flu vaccine can take up to two weeks to provide immunity. The department did not disclose details about the child’s circumstances, citing privacy concerns and respect for the family.

Health officials continue to recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone six months and older. Dr. Renia Dotson, state epidemiologist, said vaccination reduces the risk of severe outcomes but does not guarantee immunity. “A vaccination won’t necessarily keep you from getting the flu, although it can reduce your risk of infection and is the best protection to keep you from a severe outcome,” she said in a press release.

Flu shots for children are covered by insurance, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Some children may qualify for free vaccination through the Vaccines for Children Program at designated locations. Uninsured or underinsured adults at high risk may receive free vaccines at county health department clinics, while insured adults can access vaccines through pharmacies, retailers, and private physicians across the state.
