McRae: Thank You Essential Workers!

By Treasurer David McRae

We are heading into the weekend with much of our state under a winter storm warning. This huge storm is expected to hit not only Mississippi but most of the south and east coast as well. It’s forecast to be debilitating for multiple states due to very cold temperatures, and major snow and ice accumulations.

Now, I’m a lifelong Mississippian. I’m not used to this kind of weather by any means. Most of the people I know aren’t familiar with these unpredictable winter conditions. We typically enjoy warm southern nights, not bitter conditions.

However, in moments like these, I rely on the experts in the industries that keep our wonderful state safe and running, even during unprecedented times.

According to Entergy Mississippi, a half inch of ice can add up to 500 pounds of weight on power lines! We need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

It is our job as model citizens to follow winter weather advisories, prepare for possible power outages, road and bridge closures, and practice safety protocols.

I have the deepest gratitude for all the electrical linemen, MDOT highway crews, public workers, first responders, grocery employees, and everyone else who works during times like this so the rest of us can stay home safe. It is only fair as conscientious neighbors that we don’t add unnecessary stress to these workers who keep us safe and keep our state moving forward.

Before this evening, please check that you and your family are prepared for the storm ahead. Start by building an emergency kit of supplies that you might need like food, water, blankets, flashlights, etc. Fill your car’s gas tank up. Winterize your house by leaving the faucets dripping, so the pipes don’t burst. If you must leave, make sure to wear plenty of layers and stay updated on changing conditions and alerts. I don’t know about you, but right about now, I’m wishing it was sunny and 75. Since that’s not the case, we must take the time to prepare ourselves for the storm ahead, lessen the burden on essential workers, and stay safe this weekend.
