MBI investigating officer-involved incident in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (Sept. 19, 2025) – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has opened an inquiry into an officer-involved incident involving the Columbus Police Department early Friday morning.

According to MBI, the incident began around 8:36 a.m. when a Columbus police officer conducted a traffic stop near 22nd Street and 17th Avenue. Authorities said that after the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the driver of the stopped vehicle allegedly attempted to strike the officer.

The officer discharged his weapon in response but did not hit the suspect, investigators said. A brief pursuit followed until the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop. The individual then fled on foot but was quickly taken into custody without further confrontation.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect’s identity has not yet been released.

MBI agents are gathering evidence as part of their standard investigative process for critical incidents. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be presented to the local District Attorney’s Office for review. Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and details are subject to change as more information becomes available.

The Columbus Police Department has not issued a separate statement, and further details may be released in the coming days.
