MBI investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Monroe County

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing a fatal officer-involved shooting involving Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies that occurred late Monday night.

The incident took place at approximately 10:24 p.m. near the intersection of Plainfield Road and Daniels Circle in West Point.

According to a statement from MBI, deputies were originally responding to a report of an individual having a mental health crisis.

Officials said that upon arrival, deputies encountered the subject, who was holding a weapon. MBI reported that the subject then “charged at the deputies,” leading the deputies to discharge their weapons.

The subject sustained fatal injuries. No deputies were physically injured during the encounter.

MBI agents are currently assessing the incident and gathering evidence. As is standard procedure, the agency will share its findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.

Authorities stated that the information is preliminary and subject to change.
