Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy campaigns for Sen. Hyde-Smith in Flowood

U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, stumped for Mississippi’s U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith at the Sheraton Hotel Flowood last week, encouraging Republicans to return the state’s junior senator to Washington for another six-year term.

Jake Monssen, Hyde-Smith’s campaign manager, told Mississippi Today in a statement that more than 400 supporters attended the Thursday night fundraiser, and the campaign expected to raise more than $400,000.

“We were also proud to welcome Sen. John Kennedy, who brought his trademark wit and a strong message on the conservative leadership Senator Hyde-Smith brings to Washington,” Monssen said.

Hyde-Smith became a U.S. senator in 2018 after former Gov. Phil Bryant appointed her to fill the seat vacated by longtime Sen. Thad Cochran. She later won a special election in 2018 to complete the remainder of Cochran’s term and was elected to a full six-year term in 2020. She is the first woman to represent Mississippi in Congress.

Hyde-Smith is the Republican incumbent running against Democratic nominee Scott Colom, a district attorney in north Mississippi. Last quarter, Colom raised more money than Hyde-Smith, but the incumbent still has the most cash on hand.

Hyde-Smith has the power of incumbency and the endorsement of President Donald Trump. But Colom is hoping to tap into voter dissatisfaction with the Trump administration in a poor state that’s heavily reliant on federal government assistance.

The two candidates will also compete alongside independent candidate Ty Pinkins in the November 3 general election.
