Lamar Schedules Hearing on Arkabutla Lake Dam at Mississippi Capitol
JACKSON, Miss. – State Rep. Trey Lamar (R-Senatobia) announced he will hold a hearing at the Mississippi Capitol on Sept. 23 to address the structural issues surrounding the Arkabutla Lake Dam and their impact on flood control in North Mississippi.
The hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. and will include testimony from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lamar said engineers will provide an overview of the dam’s failures, the effects on the Coldwater River and its tributaries, and the anticipated costs and plans for repairing the system.
In addition to the Arkabutla Lake Dam, the discussion will cover water stabilization, minimizing flooding risks, and the broader impact on Mississippi’s flood control network, including Sardis, Enid and Grenada lakes.
“This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about this issue directly from the individuals who are responsible for crafting the plan of repair and ensuring that all of our flood control structures continue to provide needed safety and protection to our people and our property,” Lamar said.
Although Arkabutla Lake is located primarily in Tate County, Lamar noted that the dam’s failures affect a much larger area across Mississippi. He encouraged citizens who are concerned about the issue to attend the hearing.
Lamar, who chairs the Mississippi House Ways and Means Committee, said he wanted to make sure as many people as possible had the chance to hear directly from the Corps of Engineers.
