Indivisible DeSoto MS activist group endorses Colom, Johnson ahead of primaries
HERNANDO, Miss. — Indivisible DeSoto MS, a grassroots progressive activist organization, Tuesday officially endorsed Democrats Scott Colom for the U.S. Senate and James “Cliff” Johnson for the U.S. House of Representatives.
The announcement was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot, a date the group’s leadership says underscores the need for candidates with strong legal backgrounds.
“On the day made famous for insurrection, for violent attacks against the rule of law in our country, Indivisible DeSoto MS is honored to endorse Scott Colom and Cliff Johnson,” said Kurt Conrad, a representative for the group. “Both are accomplished attorneys, well-suited to understand and defend us against attacks on our cherished liberties.”
The Road to the March Primaries
The endorsements come as Mississippi prepares for the Democratic primary elections on March 10. Absentee voting is scheduled to begin Jan. 26.
Indivisible DeSoto MS, part of a national network of more than 1,700 chapters, stated that the selection of Colom and Johnson was based on their educational backgrounds and professional experience. Colom currently serves as a District Attorney, while Johnson is a prominent civil rights law professor.
Kelly Jacobs, chair of Indivisible DeSoto MS, noted that the group is shifting its focus from past advocacy—which included “No Kings” protests and digital billboard campaigns—to direct candidate support.
“This year we are planning a Town Hall on Jan. 31 and we will be actively helping our two endorsed candidates win their Democratic primary elections,” Jacobs said.
