Holly Springs Woman Arrested in Dog Mauling That Left Victim Critically Injured

A Holly Springs woman has been arrested in connection with a violent dog attack earlier this month that left a local resident critically injured.

Authorities confirmed that 54-year-old Sandra Harris was taken into custody Monday, March 23, by investigators with the Holly Springs Police Department. She has been charged with aggravated assault manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, a felony offense under Mississippi law.

Following her arrest, Harris was processed at the Holly Springs Police Department before being transferred to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, where she remains in custody.

The charges stem from a March 3 incident in which 35-year-old LaKesha Newsom was reportedly attacked by multiple dogs while walking along Highway 178 in Holly Springs. Newsom was later found in a ditch with severe injuries and was airlifted to Regional One Health in Memphis.

Family members say Newsom has been hospitalized for weeks and remains in critical condition. According to her family, the attack resulted in the loss of two limbs, and she continues to fight for her life as doctors work to keep her stable and comfortable.

Police have not officially released the victim’s identity or provided details about the number or breed of dogs involved. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
