Flags at full-staff for Inauguration Day in Mississippi

Jan. 16, 2025-American flags in Mississippi remain at half-staff in respect to the late President Jimmy Carter, who passed away Dec. 29 at the age of 100, but they will be at full staff on the Inauguration Day of President-elect Donald Trump.

By tradition and presidential proclamation, the American flag should fly at half-staff for 30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death of the president or a former president.

However, the key word is “should” and Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves Thursday announced that all American flags will be at full-staff in the state for the day on Monday, Jan. 20, which is Inauguration Day.

Reeves follows an earlier, similar action of Texas Gov. Greg Abbot, who ordered American flags in his state to be raised to full-staff on Inauguration Day.

The order for all American and state flags in Mississippi begins at sunrise and ends at sunset on Monday, Jan. 20.

“This is a historic day for America and Mississippi looks forward to celebrating it,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “Our state is excited for Donald J. Trump to be sworn in as president.”

Flags will be returned to half-staff at sunrise on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and shall remain at half-staff through sunset on Tuesday, Jan. 28, ending the 30-day period in honor of the late President Carter.
