FBI seeks public’s help in Leland mass shooting investigation; nine arrested, seven dead

LELAND, Miss. — The FBI has established a digital media tips website and is asking for the public’s help to gather photos and videos related to the Oct. 11 mass shooting in Leland that left seven people dead and more than 16 others wounded.

The investigation, a joint effort by local law enforcement, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI, has already led to nine arrests. Authorities believe the shooting, which occurred during a homecoming celebration, was not random but was sparked by a disagreement among several individuals.

  • The incident took place around midnight on Oct. 11 at the intersection of Fourth Street and North Main Street as community members celebrated after a high school homecoming football game. The seven deceased victims have been identified as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; Amos Brantley Jr., 18; JaMichael Jones, 34; and Ebanee Williams, 25.
  • At least nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting. Several suspects face capital murder charges, including Teviyon L. Powell, 29; William Bryant, 29; Morgan Lattimore, 25; and Terrogernal S. Martin, 33. Latoya A. Powell, 44, has been charged with attempted murder.
  • The FBI is actively seeking more information and has urged the public to submit any cellphone video or multimedia recordings of the incident to a new digital portal at fbi.gov/lelandmshomecomingshooting. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or visiting tips.fbi.gov.

Officials have stated that the investigation remains ongoing and that more arrests are anticipated.
